EPCOR Energy is an Alberta Utility
Although its water services are offered across North America, EPCOR is also an Alberta electricity utility under the name EPCOR Energy Alberta GP Inc. EPCOR electricity in Alberta is offered at regulated rates from this utility. EPCOR electricity services in Alberta are considered default. That is, if a consumer lives in the EPCOR service area and does not sign up with a competitive supplier, EPCOR Energy will provide power to his or her home at the EPCOR electricity rates regulated by the Alberta Utilities Commission. However, because Alberta has a deregulated energy market, if customers are unhappy with regulated EPCOR electricity rates, they have the option of choosing a competitive supplier that offers different supply rates, including Encor, the retail side of EPCOR. Energy deregulation gives customers many choices. It is important for consumers to know what is available in their area while shopping for a new rate.

EPCOR Energy was last known as Edmonton Power
EPCOR planted its roots in 1891 with its ancestor, Edmonton Electric Lighting and Power Company. This company built the original power lines in Edmonton and brought electricity to the city. When it was made public in 1902, this utility was the first municipally owned electric utility in Canada. As EPCOR Alberta's ancestor expanded, opening new power generation and water treatment plants across the province under different names, it decided to combine some of these in 1970 to form Edmonton Power. It wasn't until 1996 that all of the power generation and water treatment plants combined to form EPCOR Utilities Inc. By 2001, the universal name for these separate utilities caught on: EPCOR. Alberta EPCOR electricity services are only one facet of the company as a whole.
